Education is for all

A group of Active Citizens have started teaching the under-privileged children in their communities in Sahiwal. Sounds interesting? It is, indeed. Let's find out more about this project. The Active Citizens group consists of thirteen girls (majority of them are doing Intermediate)who have begun a centre of education for twenty-one children in Sahiwal.

The educational centre is located in Baba Mastiwali Chawk, where these girls have set-up tables, chairs, black boards and books for the children to come and study from. Five out of these thirteen girls are involved in administrating the centre while the rest of the group teaches children whole-heartedly. They aim to impart basic education to these children like learning to write alphabets, their names, short sentences like, "I am a boy", "How are you?", "Good Morning", "Good Afternoon", etc.

The girls teach in English and Urdu languages. This group of twenty-one children will study at the centre for five to six months after which new children will be enrolled. The classes are conducted five days a week for two to three hours and weekends are given off. We wish these thirteen girls all the luck in the world. What they are doing is wonderful and noble.

Mehak Sewing Centre in Sahiwal

There are many under-privileged families residing in Sahiwal. The females of these families work in homes, often cleaning, cooking and washing for their employers, only to earn a meager amount of money for their livelihoods.

The young girls of these families either have to baby sit their younger siblings or accompany their mothers to work as it isn't safe to leave them home alone. There is hardly any activity for these poor young girls. They spend their time sitting idle, are not educated, and tend to get married at a very early age. Early marriage again pose many problems and contribute to the ever increasing population.

Therefore, to encounter this problem to some extent, a group of Active Citizens have planned to start a sewing centre in Sahiwal. This sewing centre aims to equip the young girls with sewing techniques, so they can contribute in earning livelihoods for their families. Besides, the girls would be engaged in a productive activity which will consume their idle hours efficiently.

There are two to three teachers in the centre who would teach sewing to the young girls. Currently, there are eight girls learning sewing. The Active Citizens plan to continue the badge of eight girls for a period of nine months. After the girls have learned sewing properly, the teachers would release them and assign them sewing tasks so that they can earn a bit of money.

New girls will be enrolled in the sewing centre after every nine months, and the girls from previous badges would chip in help.

The Active Citizens have planned the functioning of their sewing centre in a very systematic way. They are rendering very generous and kind services to their community people, helping their children see a prosperous future.

We wish this group of Active Citizens all the best in their sincere endeavours.

Project on Free Health Centre

The cost of medical treatment in Sahiwal is very high. The under-privileged people in the area can not afford to visit the expensive hospitals for treatments. Therefore, a group of young people has set up a free health centre where people from all across Sahiwal can get free treatment for minor aliments like fever, cold, cough etc.

The young group is led by Surriya Sabir who has five members on her team. The group has arranged for three doctors who work in the health centre free and even provide the patients with medicines which are pretty costly in the market.

So far this group has treated 50 patients and provided 10 of them the medicines. The group aspires to continue treating patients free of cost for a year.

Women's Day Celebration

Faisal Idress is a young Active Citizen who is diligently working in Multan for the betterment of community and its people. Here's what he has to say about his latest SAP:

"We selected 20 talented boys from our Jagoo Pakistan group to learn acting and requested AASSAN Foundation, CHANNAN Development, RASTI, and AJOCA theatre to give us training in acting. We also requested them to educate us about the basics of drama acting.

Hence, the director of AASSAN Foundation who is trained from Philippine, and Mr. Roufi, chairman RASTI, gave us a drama training for three days.

After this training, our theatre team (Jagoo Drama Club) acted in SPO office hall. They acted on a drama which was based on Feudalism, Karo Kari and Women Empowerment. The drama was "PARADISE KILLER" which was watched by 250 people. I must confess, we didn't know that 8th March is the Women's Day. Therefore, the people who watched the drama suggested that we should do something similar on 8th March too. But, we had already planned to lit 700 candles on Women's Day and would like to deliver a lecture. The purpose of this meeting was to raise awareness what Islam says about the women's rights.

We lit 700 candles with the help of Jagoo youth group members. We displayed the number "100" to show the completion of 100 years of Women's Right Day. We promised to bring the women forward from ignorance and darkness.

Thus, we started visiting different schools and colleges to deliver lectures on Women's rights and at the end of the day, we would gather to lit candles to make this activity a memorable one. We made a promise to practise Women's right under Islamic and society role."

Pakistan Community League

This group is focused on uniting the target community’s youth on one platform where their awareness could be raised about various issues like: health, political conditions of the country, gender equality, peace and harmony, education etc.

Active Citizens executed trainings which raised their awareness within social group after which they wanted to work towards the betterment of the society by educating the poor communities.

The outcome is that the group is conducting trainings and seminars on their own through personal resources. They are also raising funds and helping the targeted community the achievement so far is that 300-400 youngsters from the targeted community are carrying out group discussions about implementing their learning in the community.

Ragged School

The project highlights the need of literacy/education within our country since Pakistan has faced set backs in many sectors due to the flood disaster. The project is based on working towards educating the street children or the ones who were not exposed to education due family crisis or disability.

The Active Citizens training aroused a spirit of volunteerism within a group of students to utilize their abilities and sources in educating or cascading the knowledge to the untaught community.

As the outcome of Active Citizens training, the participants are rendering voluntary services in the education sector in terms of time, money and resources. So far, a number of 13 children have been enrolled for the education program initiated by the young Active Citizens.

The students are interested and excited to learn and acquire education since they have never been to school even though they wished to. The keen interest of these children has assured the young Active Citizens of successful results as the project has moved into a different phase.

As an achievement, there will be more learned and educated youth/individuals within our community.

Raddi to Rehabilation

This project is focused on helping the flood affectees by collecting Raddi, raising funds by selling the collected raddi we help the flood victims.

The role of Active Citizen was to raise awareness within these groups and to be responsible to carry out this activity. And due to this awareness aroused by the Active Citizens, these students are very actively involved in this project. The biggest achievement was to collect the significant amount of funds through collecting and selling raddi, as it wasn't an easy task to collect enough raddi.

There was a group almost 150 young people who volunteered in this project involving around 1500 households approximately in this initiative.

Women empowerment through skills and literacy promotion in Quetta

“The fourteen years of education did not bring any breakthrough that a four days training have brought in our life,” says Summaya, a young motivated girl of Amozgah group formed after the training finished. This group is not only registered but also creating basis for further developments. It’s a group of nine young girls who are resident of Hazara community named as Murriabad, one of the most marginalized locations of Quetta in regard security and threat to their identity.

Apparently, this area seems to be one of the potential areas in terms of the facilities provided by the Government and sustained by the community itself but if we analyze the socio economic status of the community, women will be very visibly contributing to the lively hood for the survival of the family. The present situation of the district is lemmatizing the mobility of the men in the city that’s one of the reasons that women have to play her role for the advancement of the family.

“We have taken this step because we felt that it is the need of our community to have such a place where women and girls who cannot afford the expenses of education and any kind of skills can take the free classes without any kind of discrimination,” Summaya said. The group explored a potential place for women education and skill enhancement based on the need assessment of the area. The skills and literacy classes have been going really good with different age groups.

“This SAP increases the literacy rate in our community and it’s also an income generating project for skilled workers. This project also helped us in improving the confidence level in our youth group.” More than two hundred and fifty girls and women have been privileged by organizing skills and literacy classes by a young group of active citizens.

“We trust you because you proved it by renovating our children from ordinary to a responsible person,” a parent said.

The group is looking forward to register Amozgah as an independent organization and explore funding opportunities not only from the donors but also from the community.

The success of this SAP proved that young leaders only require the push of motivation and community actually needs a reason for engagement of the youth in positive activism when the residents of the of the community works for their own people subsequently the result is always outstanding as they are in better position to identify issues of mutual concern as well as the available resources to utilize them for sustainability of the progress.

Awareness on Child Rights and Child Sexual Abuse by Bright Youth Group Theater Group

It’s been very usual when ever any natural disaster stroked any part of the country. It left irremovable pictures of the horrifying misery same kind of tragedy has been observed during the time when flood hit the most valuable areas of Pakistan. This was not only money-oriented loss but people also experienced mental chaos. In this miserable condition thousand left their and rushed to Quetta for their survival.

A group of youth happened to visit few of the camps established for the flood affecties and witnessed that the kids and children were the most vulnerable group among the residents of the camps. They decided to spend some time interacting with the kids by creating awareness through theater performance.

The Bright Youth Group focused two camps initially and got support from the organizations that were already helping kids and children. The children were high risk as many incidents were witnessed e.g. child abuse with in the camps and abduction of female children. The parents were in traumatic condition particularly and many of them were seriously sick.

The Bright Youth Group have successfully communicated their messages for the protection of the children in the camps focusing more than700 children. They provided them psycho-social support so that the kids and parents not only protect themselves but also play their roles in rehabilitation.

Enhancing skills program starts in Nepal

Yuvraj was very intrigued with the essence of Active Citizens Training that is using local resources and making a difference. His SAP revolved around imparting training to local individuals on making various items out of bamboo such as Muda (bamboo chair), decoration pieces etc. He also trained them in using the bamboo roots to craft birds’ nest instead of wasting them. This training was given to 10 individuals and they are now fully involved in earning a wage from 5000 to 10000.

He also trained 20 individuals in Mushroom farming through which many are making a reasonable living. The first Mushroom farming season is already finishing and these trained individuals are now preparing for the second season. Apart from this, Yuvraj has been running Open-Defecation Free Campaigns in various schools. He has also been running forestation programs and vegetable farming training where farmers are earning up to 4000 to 5000. Female figures of the community have been trained with sewing their own undergarments.

This SAP has enabled the youth in his community with an opportunity of receiving trainings and hence developing their skills and capabilities. It has enabled them to stand on their own and become economically independent. They have overcome their frustrations and malpractices such as alcoholism, drug abuse, cigarette smoking etc. and are utilizing their time, energy and skill productively. Many families have identified their new sources of income.

Developing a Community Library in Nepal

A group of four Active citizens, Devaka, Prabina, Santosh and Jeevan were successful in renovating and converting a small library containing 20 books to a huge library containing 300 useful books and 10 magazines at Lokalachhen, Bhaktapur. They did this with the help of the small seed money of £300 provided by the British Council as part of its Active Citizens Project.

They persuaded the community leaders to allow them to use a building which was used only once a year for religious purposes. They now utilize that building as a library, recreation center for students where they’ve stored various books, magazines, games such as chess, badminton etc. It has also been established as a discussion center for Young Girls Group - where they hold meetings every Saturday and try and seek solutions to their problems. They have managed to get free subscription of magazines and books for Classes 9, 10, Bachelor and Masters. They’ve hired female librarians and are offering library membership.

This SAP was chosen to make an effective use of old community buildings. Besides, Lokalachhen comprises of poor people whose only source of income is agriculture. They enroll their children in schools as a formality and do not conceive education as an investment. Also, the education their children receive is not as effective as it should be. They go to schools void of books and study materials. Thus, through this SAP, our young active citizens wanted to provide such students books and a community owned learning center, where they could broaden their horizons.

Debaka Joshi, an Active Citizens said “Earlier, nobody used to visit the library but after we started keeping the course books and introduced membership, students came and sought membership.” The founder of the library Mr. Ram Prasad Aganja said, “Not only the students benefit but the elders used to waste time playing cards, are coming to read newspapers and other books they like. It is developing our community.” Miss Sapana Yalance thanked the Active Citizens and said, “This library has helped me so much, it was very difficult to buy the course books due to my economic condition. I’m very happy to get the course books here.”

Sanitation and other social problems are being solved in Nepal.

After a group of youth had entered and explained the villagers the concept of ‘one house, one latrine,’54-year-old Hari Ram Chaudhary of Phachakpur, thought of constructing a latrine. So, he joined hands with the youth of the village to participate in building the latrines. In Phachakpur village, the task of building a toilet in every house has been launched as a campaign.

Prem Lal Chaudhary, chairperson of Nawashanti Yuva Club, said the other villagers have started supporting the campaign led by the local youth. Owing to the open defecation by villagers due to lack of latrines in the village, the whole village was suffering from foul stench. Said Chaudhary, ‘newcomers in the village were forced to walk around the village with their noses covered, but after we launched the ‘one house, one latrine’, villagers are scared to defecate in the open. The village has a thick settlement comprising 50 Tharu households. The Tharu youth are becoming aware. The practice of visiting witch doctors whenever anyone suffered from diarrhoea is becoming less and less and the sick are taken to the hospital. The District Drinking Water Division Office has provided rings for toilet construction to 24 households.

Similarly, the youth of Chailahi are preparing to launch a new project to clean their town. Arjun Subedi, a member, said a plan has been devised to encourage the volunteers in Lamahi Bazaar. The youth wants to participate in the sanitation drive in partnership with the government. Reesav Pokhrel, another member of the group, says he wants to work as an associate by making arrangements for dustbins in every locality of the town.

Rajendra Khadka, a resident of Chelahi-9, is involved in conserving the historic temple in his village, Narayanpur. According to him, if the number of tourists to the village could be increased by conserving the temple, the development of village would also take place. He added the number of visitors to the temple has gradually increased. Nepal-British Council and Community Development Forum, Lamahi, have trained more than 300 youth of Dang Deukhuri.

The youth affiliated with the youth clubs running in the seven villages and one municipality of Dang are being developed as conscious citizens through the Conscious Citizen Programme and being involved in the local-level development. Said Madan Adhikari, founder chairperson of Community Development Forum, the youth are actively involved in the village conservation.
